Sapphira is the general name for the series of islands between Alderfold and Drex, but also is the common name of the city on the main island. The outer islands are actually naturally very cold compared to much of Obsidia, but a volcano on the main island provides the near-limitless amount of steam power that the city uses for its vast network of steam vents and forges. The city spreads out around the volcano in a wedge pattern. The closest area to the volcano is the Steamworks, which is the industrial area. All of the mechnical parts produced and distributed by the city are forged in the Steamworks. The area is plagued by sweltering heat from the volcano, so most of the residents don’t actually live in the Steamworks. The two other districts are the Arcologe and the Market. The Arcologe is the area where a vast majority of the residents live. The Arcologe is a colossal multilevel tower with a set of massive moving platforms traveling between the various levels. Continual improvements are being made to the tower, to strengthen it and add new levels as the need arises. The lowest levels are taken up by extremely rich volcanic farmland, which provide much of the food supply for the rest of Sapphira. The Market is fairly self-explanatory. It is set up as a fairly normal market, except for various mechanically augmented human husks acting as dockworkers in the docks section. Steam equipment is surgically implanted in these husks such that they ask as mindless zombies. Not many questions are asked about where these husks actually come from, since the actual method of creating them is kept a secret by the five Lords of Mechanika, the rulers of the city. There is little doubt among the well-educated citizens of Sapphira that the high disappearance rates of the city have something to do with it, but nobody says anything as long as the Lords command the army and the husks. The Sapphiran Armada is based within the Market District, and the army sleeps and trains onboard the ships rather than in the Arcologe.
The Sapphiran Army is a formidable force in Obsidia. The main shock troops are issued steam fists and shield cannons as well as clockwork rifles, and wear scale armor. The officers are generally issued pistols and/or chainguns, depending on their size and strength. Sapphira is home to a multitude of races, but dwarves are rare because of their tendency to stay within the confines of the Conclave.
A system of pneumatic tubes provides the transportation between the various islands. The tubes are highly pressurized using steam power and are capable of extremely fast travel. The outlying islands are mostly farmland except for the southwest island, which contains the Sea Oracle, an ancient holy temple which has remained untouched by the mechanical city nearby due to its reputation as a good luck charm for sailors, as well as a place of meditation for clerics. It has recently become a place of worship for multiple deities, with Sapphira financing a magnificent temple of Erathis.
